I Will Never be a Great Golfer

“Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right” (Philippians 4:8).
We played nine holes of golf last night and I had a pretty good game. During the summer and autumn months we often play late on Sunday afternoons. Surprisingly, the weather was still gorgeous. (Usually at this time of year British Columbia gets a lot of rain.) Having a beautiful golf course to play is one of the problems with my game. I can’t concentrate. It is so difficult for me to give my complete attention to hitting the ball correctly when there is so much to look at.
The squirrels are running back and forth across the fairways gathering nuts and acorns. Overhead, the geese are practicing flying in formation. Golden leaves on the trees are so vibrant against the blue sky and the green lush grass. The coloured leaves have formed a brightly coloured carpet around the trees. Who but God could have put together the colors of autumn? My heart wells up with praise - oops - it’s my turn to play again (the golfers behind us aren’t impressed with my daydreaming).
Concentrating. Keeping your mind on the right things. That takes discipline. When I was in elementary school, I was called a daydreamer and sometimes I still have a tendency to think a lot.
Philippians 4:8 tells us to
“fix” our thoughts on what is true and good.
Colossians 3:2 says,
“Let heaven fill your thoughts….”
It is up to us to reign in our thoughts when they want to fly off in negative directions and to chose to turn them to think about what is true and good.
Father, thank You for Your beautiful creation. How I enjoy it. Jesus is much more beautiful. Help us to concentrate on Him, fix our thoughts on Him and on heaven. Amen.
