REBEKAH
by Joyce Carr Stedelbauer
Back to Index
Rebekah the fair of Mesopotamia,
answer to servant’s prayer,
seeking a bride for his master’s son
in the land from which they had come.
Compassed by an angel guide
he came to Nahor’s well
in the cool of evening, speaking
patterned words he knew well.
An oath, a sign, a Covenant.
the one whom the Lord had sent.
Celebrating the family bond, he offered
silver and golden gifts all around.
You accepted the proposal with alacrity,
blessed, next morning rode forth happily,
a bride seeking her groom in a foreign land.
He waited expectantly, eyes searching
the horizon daily, then out of the midday sun,
a camel caravan rose like a rolling ship
cresting desert waves of sand,
until by evening it came to rest.
You stepping down, veiled modestly,
and gave Isaac your brave hand.
Welcomed in his departed mother’s tent,
there you knew you were meant
to love, comfort and join this man,
by his side faithfully to stand.
You knew years of plenty and famine,
struggled to bear your twins,
and to comprehend God’s plan.
While they dug again Abraham’s wells
you moved across the land, settling to rest
by – the well of the oath – Beersheba.
I looked for you in the market there,
faces rich with your generations,
imagined your braceleted arm.
flashing in the desert sun,
soothing a husband’s tired brow,
manipulating your favored son
to receive the ancient blessing,
The elder shall serve the younger.
Certainly you did know,
remembering that at their birth,
God had willed it so.
