LOT'S WIFE
You lost your life, for looking back
to the land of might-have-been,
a natural inclination, but you left
a city of lasciviousness and gross sin.
Moving often, you knew the demands
of starting all over again,
New neighbors to cultivate,
small talk, so slow to grow
into subjects of substance,
tedious rows of words to hoe.
Young daughter complaining,
no boyfriends to know.
The last night of Sodom
a terrifying reality.
Angels barring the door
against threatening men, finally
blinding them to protect
your home form carnality.
Incredible, to have Angels
taking you by the hand
warning, not to turn again,
leading to a safe land.
Salt tears on your face,
heedless, there you stand,
forever seeing awesome destruction
an angry God rained down
against evil corruption
rooted in your town.
You left married children, too,
never taught that grace abounds
where sin grows rampant.
If only you had remembered your heritage,
following Abraham’s God in repentance.
The land of might-have-been
would be the heavenly entrance.
