Kill Deer Birds

“I will meditate on the glorious splendour of your majesty, and on Your wondrous works” (Psalm 145:5).
This bird makes her home on our property. It is called a Kill Deer. In spring, she makes her nest beside our driveway in the rocks and brush or in the shavings in the horses' riding corral – or even on a pile of rocks. Her feathers are the perfect color so that neither dogs nor cats nor people can see her unless they stop and look really hard.
You hardly ever find this type of bird, their nests or their eggs - they make their nest on the ground. They blend in perfectly with the grass and rocks. You can rarely find them. They are absolutely amazing.
I was lucky to discover a killdeer nest. The nest was along our driveway and among the rocks close to the house. I noticed the adult birds seemed to be hanging around in the same place. I also noticed that if anything came near the nest, be it a person, dog or other animal, the adult killdeer would walk away from the nest and pretend to have a broken wing. I walked slowly and looked carefully for the nest. I didn’t want to step on the eggs. When I found the nest with four eggs, it was camouflaged to make it look like rocks.
When the baby birds were hatched (born), they already had feathers the same day, and soon they were running after their parents in the deep grass.
When children run after them and try to find and catch the babies, they are hard to see and can run very fast. Children can hardly ever catch them.
God is so good at hiding little animals and birds—to protect them. He is also good at protecting us. Let’s thank Him for the wonderful way he protects birds and animals. And thank Him for protecting us.
Lord Jesus, thank you for the wonderful birds and animals you created. Thank you for protecting them. Thank you for protecting us. Amen.
