The Lord says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you Psalms 32:8.

We were anchored at a beautiful beach in the Spanish Virgin Islands. My thirteen-year-old daughter had met a friend and they were off adventuring in the kayaks.

Upon their return, they were full of excitement, chatting about the spot they had found. After beaching the kayaks and discovering a mountain they wanted to climb, they ventured all the way to the top. They navigated their way through steep, rocky terrain covered with many different types of cactus. As they didn’t anticipate the treacherous journey they would encounter, they neglected to bring shoes.

The next day, my daughter was up bright and early, excited to take me on the same trek. With shoes on, we boarded the kayaks. Once ashore, we began the excursion up the mountain for the spectacular view. Not long into the journey, we looked just five feet over and saw a well-traveled trail. She couldn’t believe her eyes: a trail with no jagged rocks or thorny cactus. Just a slight alteration to yesterday’s route, and they could have spared their feet such agony.

How many times do I find myself in parallel situations? If only I had consulted the Lord before retaliating with my tongue. If only I had remembered God’s word about being a servant. What about the times I deliberately choose not to follow my husband’s lead because I want something else?

How many times conflict could have been avoided if I spoke to Jesus first and recalled what He has taught me in His Word. Seeking the path He has laid out for me in scripture, rather than forging my own way, will protect me and the relationships with those around me.

Spectacular view from the top. Follow the map.

Thank you Jesus, that you have given me an exact map for my travels in life. Thank you that Your Word provides all the answers I will ever need. Please help me to look to you before making any decisions or course changes in order that I do not wander away from your plan for my life. Thank you for making your direction clear to anyone who looks for it. Amen.

“David shouted in reply, ‘You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD Almighty-the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied’”  1 Samuel 17:45

We all know the story of David and Goliath from first Samuel. Jesse sends David out to the battlefield to bring his brothers some nourishment and to bring back a report. David ends up fighting a giant.

Nowhere do I read that David received a revelation from God to fight Goliath. He simply saw that this warrior was defying his God, and he leapt into action. In fact, he seemed to be at complete peace about the whole situation.

Fast forward a few years to 1 Samuel 21:10-15. Go ahead, open your bible and see what happened.

Somewhere along the line, David forgot to trust in God’s strength and began to rely upon his own strength. He began to doubt God’s calling on his life as Israel’s next king. He was afraid.

What happens when you allow fear to intrude into your life? When you begin to trust your own strength a little too much? Do you question God’s direction in your life? Do you give up? Does illness set in? When fear sets in, do you look like the madman described above?

No matter how often we fall, God will always go before us and help us to be strong and courageous. His Spirit helps us control our lives. He is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.

We have nothing to fear.

God, thank you for going before me  in everything you have called me to. Thank you that I have nothing to fear because You promise strength and courage. Thank you for your faithfulness to your children. Amen.

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching”  Hebrews 10:24-25.

It had been eight months since I had attended church.

No problem, I thought, I pray, watch podcasts, and study God’s Word by myself. It’s all good, right? That’s what I thought…until God showed me otherwise.

Arriving in Grenada on our sailboat two weeks ago, we headed to town to stretch our legs. A few minutes into our walk, I spied a God believing church. Tomorrow was Sunday. Perfect.

Arriving early, I participated in the ladies’ morning bible study, heard from the women’s hearts, and shared from mine. Tears of overwhelming joy began to well up. I was with complete strangers, but I was with my family: the family of God. My soul was craving fellowship with other believers and I didn’t even know it. My soul was craving the love and fellowship with others who loved Jesus.

Thank you God for, once again, knowing my needs better than I do.

The second blessing came when unforeseen circumstances required us to be in the same community the following Sunday. I was able to attend the church a second time!

Coincidence? I think not.
God’s love for his child? Definitely!

Why does God want us to fellowship? Why does He command that we meet regularly? Why does He teach us to learn about Him and read his Word continually?

Without God at the forefront of my mind throughout the majority of the day, I allow other things and people to take His place. Unwittingly, I had allowed God to slip to a secondary priority in my life and it was very evident. God graciously revealed my oversight and gently gave my life a route adjustment.

Thank you Jesus that You love me deeply. Thank you for giving Your children perfect gifts from above. Thank you for giving us other like-minded believers who we can learn from and grow with. Thank you that You have created us to be dependent upon You and your provisions for us. Thank you that regardless of my geographical location, You provide a means for me to study and learn about You. I love you Jesus. Amen.

devotional on knocking at door

Then you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Lord, open the door for us!’ But he will reply, ‘I do not know you’Luke 13:25

When an unfamiliar neighbor from down the street shows up at your door, suitcase in hand, ready to move in with you, do you open the door widely for him? I wouldn’t.

Jesus talks in Luke 13 about the narrow door by which heaven will be found. Some will be rejected because He does not know them. What does it mean to “know Jesus”? Do you really know Him? Do you laugh and cry with Him? Do you depend on Him? Are you so in love with Him that it spills out to the people around you?

Will Jesus say He knew me when I stand before Him in heaven? If you aren’t sure, click here to start a personal relationship with Him.

We come to know Him more deeply through conversation with the Almighty One, through trusting in Him and through learning about him through the bible. What an honor it is to be in a relationship with Him where we can seek His face each every moment of every day. How lost I would be without Him as my anchor.

Thank you Jesus desiring to know me more. Thank you for never growing tired of our relationship. Thank you for revealing yourself to me through your Word and for choosing me to be Your child. Amen.

devotional on direction

Understand, therefore, that the LORD your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and constantly loves those who love him and obey his commandsDeuteronomy 7:9.

After traveling in our sailboat for three months, we were all excited to have a rental car and be heading off to town in Puerto Rico to gather the supplies we needed. We had a makeshift map and spotty Wi-Fi and we were off.

Much to our astonishment, we had driven for twenty minutes and not found a single street sign! How were we to know where to turn? Which direction should we go? What a frustrating experience. We were lost without proper directions.

In the same way, I can get lost each and every day if I don’t look to the road signs that God puts out for me. When I hear that still, small voice nudging me to hold my husband’s hand, to give an extra-long hug to a child who needs it, or to make that long overdue call to a friend, I need to follow those directions. These are the road signs God puts out for me in order to show His love to those around me. Now, isn’t that what we are called to do?

When we listen to God, He will pour out the spirit of wisdom upon us and make us wise. He will let us live in peace and safety, unafraid of harm. When we listen and obey, our paths will be straight and we will not question which way to go. He will guide and direct us at every turn.

Thank you God that you know the way. You ARE the Way, the Truth and the Life. You guide and direct us and show us the path we should take. Please help us to remember to follow your directions each and every day and not rely on our own understanding. Amen.
