Refugees

by Katherine Kehler

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me” (Matthew 25:35).

Lately, most every newscast shows pictures of refugees streaming from their homes and everything comfortable and familiar, taking with them only what they can carry - mothers, small children and old people all fleeing from war and destruction. They don’t know where they are going, but they know they are not safe where they are.

Have you ever been a refugee? Or do you know someone who has been? My mother was. Her family fled to Canada during the Russian revolution. Having grown up in an affluent home with servants, they now found themselves begging for food. They told us of the day my grandfather found and bought shoes for his shoeless children only to find out the shoes were all for the same foot. They wore them anyway. Another time they were able to buy some meat but when they unwrapped the package, it was a woman’s breast. Cruel, disgusting, hard times, but God was faithful and the whole family migrated to Canada in 1923.

Last week I received several testimonies from refugees who fled from the Middle East to Greece. They were fed, clothed and given shelter by a Christian group. It did not take long before they put their faith in Christ. They experienced the love of Christ through the Christians working there.

If God is impressing on you to help provide food, clothing, and medical supplies for the refugees, you can read about and partner with Global Aid International Network by visiting their website: www.gainusa.org.

Father, I pray for Your protection over the thousands of refugee fleeing from their homes right now. Give strength and wisdom to the mothers, children and old people. Supply their needs. Cause someone to introduce them to Jesus is who their Hope and Shield. Amen.
